Cycling along the Maas and the Waal

Between two rivers lies a flat, wide land of dikes, polders and orchards. A guide for cyclists who want to discover the region at their own pace.

The Land van Maas en Waal is a narrow strip between two great rivers. It is precisely this position that makes cycling here special: wherever you ride, the water is never far away. The Maas to the south, the Waal to the north, and between them a flat land of dikes, polders and orchards.

The junction network as your guide

You do not need to memorise a route here. The cycle junction network covers the whole region, so you note down a few numbers in advance and set your own distance along the way. Want it shorter, you cut across; have the wind behind you, you ride on.

Dikes, castles and ferries

The finest kilometres lie on the dikes, with the floodplains below you and the river moving quietly alongside. Castles appear along the way: the well-preserved Hernen, the ruin of Batenburg with its mill, and in Wijchen the Renaissance-style castle. On summer days foot ferries connect the banks, so you can cross from one side to the other.

Seasons on the bike

In spring the orchards turn white and pink, in summer the grass in the floodplains is full of flowering herbs, and in autumn long, low skies lie over the polder. It is a region that changes with the seasons, yet stays flat and easy to cycle all year.

From Niftrik

A quiet place to set off is Niftrik, a village right on the Maas. Hoogeerd sits directly on the river, rents bikes and has a covered store with a charging point. You set off from the front door and return to a table overlooking the water.

If you would rather take the region in a single loop, our route over the dikes past the castles makes a fine backbone for a full day of cycling.
