Land van Maas en Waal
From Hoogeerd in Niftrik you follow the cycle junction network into the polder. The land is flat, the wind your only climb; between the Maas and the Waal you string together villages, dikes and orchards.
You pass the beautifully preserved Hernen castle with its gates and moats, and further on the castle ruin of Batenburg with the old mill rising above the village. They are the landmarks of a region that has lived between the water for centuries.
Near Appeltern you settle at De Gouden Ham, a broad stretch of water with an open connection to the Maas. A good spot for a break with a view of the sailing boats before you turn back over the dike.
The return runs largely along the Maas dike, with the floodplains below you and the river moving quietly alongside. On the way you cross one of the foot ferries that link the banks.
Hoogeerd rents bikes and has a covered store with a charging point, so you can set off straight away. Afterwards a table by the river awaits.
This route is still being finalised — the GPX download and exact coordinates will follow soon.
