Region
The rolling hill country of the deep south.
Zuid-Limburg is the only corner of the Netherlands where the horizon rolls. Hills rise here, sunken lanes wind through the green, and vineyards lean against the slopes. You come to slow down — to walk, to taste, to step out of time for a while.

The only large heath in South Limburg, with woods, fens and the Roode Beek, set in the triangle between Heerlen, Brunssum and Landgraaf.

A cross-border stream valley near Landgraaf and Kerkrade, where the meandering Worm, gravel banks and quiet woods let nature have the last word.

Lanes carved deep into the loess and whitewashed timber-framed houses give the villages around Landgraaf their unmistakable South Limburg character.

Founded in 1104 and grown into the largest abbey complex in the Benelux, with a Romanesque church and quiet courtyards in Kerkrade.

On the south-facing slopes of the hill country grapes ripen on loess; South Limburg has grown into a serious wine region of fresh, fruity white wines.
Nowhere else in the Netherlands does the land rise and fall like this. Beech woods, stream valleys and hollow lanes shape the hill country; half-timbered farms and south-facing vineyards sit among the folds. The light is softer here, the pace slower. Zuid-Limburg feels like a country of its own.
This is walking and cycling country at its best. On foot you follow paths over the ridges, through the valleys and along the purple heath of the Brunssummerheide. By bike you ride from climb to view — every summit pays out in a long horizon. And afterwards, the calm comes of its own accord.
The region is as Burgundian as it is green. Limburg hospitality means long tables, good wine and taking your time. On the sunny slopes the grapes ripen for local wines — you taste the terroir in the glass, often with a view of the very vineyard it came from.
The Flow hotels in Zuid-Limburg are your quiet home base: somewhere to set out from, lose yourself in the hills, and return. Generous in feeling, personal in experience — and the region begins right at your doorstep.

The Winselerhof near Landgraaf makes a lovely base: a sixteenth-century farmstead in the greenery, with the Strijthagerbeek valley literally on the doorstep and short drives to the Brunssummerheide, the Wormdal and Rolduc Abbey.
South Limburg is the only true hill country in the Netherlands. Beneath the rolling plateaus lies chalk limestone from the Cretaceous, and sunken lanes have carved deep into the soft loess. Together with the timber-framed villages and stream valleys, that gives it an atmosphere you find nowhere else in the country.
Yes. The Wormdal and the surrounding heath nature park extend onto German soil, and there are walking and cycling routes that cross the border almost unnoticed. Bear in mind that you slip from the Netherlands into Germany and back again with barely a sign.
Certainly. The hills make it ideal for walking and cycling, with routes through stream valleys, across plateaus and along heath and woodland. If you prefer a gentler pace, pair a morning walk with culture at Rolduc and a regional wine at the table.
