Starting point: at the edge of the heath

This walk takes you through two very different landscapes close to Landgraaf. You begin at the edge of the Brunssummerheide, the largest heathland in Limburg, which stretches between Brunssum, Heerlen and Landgraaf.

Along the way: heath, fens and woods

On sandy paths you cross open heath that turns purple in August, past fens and stretches of woodland. The relief here was shaped by the area's geology: drift sand, stream valleys and changes in height alternate. Towards the Roode Beek it becomes wetter and greener.

Highlight: the border river Worm

The second part descends to the Worm valley, where the river forms the border between the Netherlands and Germany. It is a deeply incised, flower-rich stream valley; with luck you will see a kingfisher dart along the water. The quiet here is a fine contrast to the open heath.

Back: climbing up to the start

The return climbs back out of the valley. This final stretch is what makes the walk demanding: expect a solid climb before you are back on the higher ground and heading for the start.

Good to know

  • Demanding because of the height differences and the length; take enough water.
  • On the Brunssummerheide a lead requirement or dog ban often applies to protect nature; for that reason we list this loop as not dog-friendly.
  • August is the finest time for the flowering heath.
  • Distance and duration are approximate; the exact route follows.

From Winselerhof

Winselerhof lies a short distance from the heath and the Worm valley, and is a pleasant base for this strenuous day. Afterwards a warm shower, a glass of wine from the hotel's own estate and an Italian dinner await.

This route is still being finalised — the GPX download and exact coordinates will follow soon.
