Some places simply ask to be discovered as a pair. The Vechtdal near Ommen is one of them: the Vecht winds slowly through a valley of estates, forest and heath, and the pace drops of its own accord. Two days are exactly enough to settle into it together.
Saturday: arriving by the water
Begin in the heart of Ommen, where the Vecht flows through the Hanseatic town. A walk along the Waterfront, a terrace looking out over the water, and you feel the bustle of home slipping away. The river is in no hurry here, and neither need you be.
In the late afternoon the light falls low over the water meadows. This is the moment to follow the bank hand in hand, past the pollard willows, as the shadows lengthen across the grass.
Sunday: into the drift sand
The next morning, head out into nature. From Ommen you walk straight into the forest and the Sahara drift sand, an open plain of sand between Zeesse and Junne. The sand crunches underfoot and the world seems to stand still for a moment.
Further on lies the Junne estate, with its oak lanes and the Vecht sliding quietly past. Bring some bread and find a spot on the bank; you need no programme to have a fine morning here.
Why it works
A romantic weekend needn't be grand. Here it lives in the small things: water passing slowly, sand underfoot, and the time to really talk again. The Vechtdal gives you the room for that all by itself.
Travel slowly, and the landscape gives the time back to you.
