Some places ask you to lose track of time together. The South Limburg hill country is such a place: gently rolling, quiet, with villages that are never in a hurry. A weekend here is not about doing as much as possible, but about needing to do nothing together.
Arriving on the estate
You drive onto the courtyard of Winselerhof and the pace drops by itself. The sixteenth-century farmstead lies around a courtyard in the Strijthagerbeek valley, surrounded by green. It is immediately clear that you have not come here to rush, but to stay.
A walk through the slopes
The finest way to wake up together is a walk into the valley. Narrow paths run along the brook and climb to a view over the rolling fields. Along the way sunken lanes, a small chapel, the sound of water. You need to say little; the landscape does the work.
Long evenings at the table
In the evening the centre of gravity shifts to the table. At Pirandello you dine quietly and attentively, course after course, by candlelight; if you want it more relaxed, you share a bottle of wine and a few dishes at Luigi's. Then a glass in the courtyard under the evening sky, and the day is complete.
The rest of the region
Those who wish can extend the weekend with the wine slopes around Kerkrade, a terrace in a half-timbered village or a ride over the border towards Aachen. But there is no need: the beauty of this hill country is that doing nothing already feels like enough.
The weekend, arranged
If you want to give this to each other without any puzzling, the La Dolce Vita weekend is made for this mood: a stay, Italian dining and the room to take your time together. Just arrive, and the rest follows.
A romantic weekend in the hill country is, in the end, simple: rolling hills by day, a long table in the evening, and all the time in the world in between.
