Few regions are as pleasant with a dog as Drenthe. The land is flat, the paths are quiet, and the mix of wood, heath and sandy lanes keeps both you and your four-legged friend alert. Around Odoorn you will find room to walk in every direction.
Where to go
The Odoorn forest is a rewarding area: wide sand paths beneath the pines, open heath and plenty of space. The Valthe wood and the woods around Exloo also lend themselves well to a long morning walk. Bear in mind that some parts are grazed by sheep — there a leash requirement, or even a ban on dogs, often applies.
Practical tips
- Always bring water; on the open heath there is little shade in summer.
- Mind the season: in the breeding season (spring) stricter leash rules often apply.
- Check the signs on the spot — dogs are sometimes not allowed near sheep flocks.
- After a wet walk, a towel in the car is worth its weight in gold.
Build up gently
The lovely thing about Drenthe is that you can pace your day yourself. A short loop through the woods in the morning, a longer heath walk in the afternoon, and in between a terrace where your dog is simply welcome inside. No rush, no crowds.
Staying with your dog in Odoorn
De Oringer Marke lies within walking distance of the first forest paths, so you can step straight outside in the morning. Below you will find the hotel as a quiet base camp for a dog-friendly weekend.
