Duration

Dog-friendly

You set off from Ootmarsum and soon pick up the cycle-node network heading east, into the land of the Dinkel. The riding is along quiet country lanes between fields and wooded banks.

Along the way

The Dinkel is one of the few strongly meandering rivers in the Netherlands: it winds freely through the landscape, with green banks and steep inner bends. Along the way you pass the wet woods of Achter de Voort, Agelerbroek and Voltherbroek, damp deciduous forests that are exceptionally rich in plants thanks to the lime-rich subsoil.

Highlight

The Lutterzand is the turning point. Here the Dinkel has carved out sandy banks and steep edges, and you can rest right by the water. It is one of the loveliest spots along the river and a natural place to pause.

Back

Via Denekamp and the open fields you ride a wide loop back to Ootmarsum. The final stretch climbs gently towards the moraine, so you see the church towers of the town from afar.

Good to know

  • Follow the cycle-node network; the route is almost entirely paved.
  • Part of it runs close to the German border; bring ID if you wish.
  • An ordinary touring bike or e-bike is fine; little elevation change.

From Hotel De Landmarke

From De Landmarke you can ride straight into the Dinkelland. At the end of the day you cycle back to Ootmarsum, where the hotel awaits in the centre of the artist town.
