Achterhoek
This loop takes you past the old estates east of Lochem, where woods, avenues and small manor houses lend the landscape a stately air. You ride largely on quiet cycle paths and country lanes, with plenty of variation between shady forest and open meadows.
First you reach the Ampsen estate, with its centuries-old beeches and oaks. Small fields and grasslands lie between the woodland parcels, and the manor is tucked away at the end of a long avenue. It is cool and green here, even on a warm day.
Further on you reach the Verwolde estate with Huis Verwolde. Nearby stands 'De Dikke Boom', one of the oldest and thickest summer oaks in the Netherlands, with a trunk you would need several people to embrace. It is worth getting off the bike to look up here.
Through ribbon villages and old church paths you cycle a wide loop back towards Lochem. Along the way you pass hedgerows and old farmhouses that give the layered landscape its typical, framed appearance.
Hotel Hof van Gelre in Lochem is your start and finish; after the ride you slide straight in for a drink while your legs are still buzzing.
